Has Twitter jumped the shark? Is it just a fad that will die off in another 18 months? Is microblogging the next Tamagotchi pet?

I think Twitter – or some form of microblogging – is here to stay. For one, it fills a large void. It is virtually impossible to sift through all the content on your favorite blogs, just as it has become impractical to update all 230,498 of your social networking profiles throughout the workday.

Where RSS fails (accessibility to the masses), Twitter has succeeded – to a degree. Only rarely did you ever hear a ‘talking head’ make mention of the network’s RSS feed. Now, Anderson Cooper drops a Twitter reference in nearly every segment. And even the places where Twitter is mystifying to new users (the concept of @username, #hashtags and DMs) are relatively navigable with little experience.

While it’s easy to draw a negative conclusion from the fact that Twitter has gone mainstream, I truly believe that microblogging is here to stay. With that being said, I would be surprised if a smarter, more corporate brand hits the scene within two years.
